FX Luminaire Vantage VW-51 wall wash lighting a shrub beside a gravel path

FX Luminaire Vantage VW-51 Wall Wash: Why the Wide Beam Is the Point

The FX Luminaire Vantage VW-51 is a compact MR-16 wall wash built for the job most accent lights do badly: lighting a surface evenly, without a bright hotspot and without the lamp staring back at you. It is 5.9 inches tall and 4.3 inches wide, die-cast aluminum, and it aims through more than 220 degrees so one fixture can wash a wall, a trunk, or a low foundation.

What makes the VW-51 good at washing a surface

A wall wash succeeds when the plane looks lit and the fixture disappears. The VW-51 is built around that, not around raw lumen bragging.

  • Frosted lens and a 60° wide flood. The P4 lamp is 190 lumens at 2700K. That is a modest number on purpose. Spread across a wide beam and a frosted lens, it reads as an even wash instead of a coin of light on the stucco.
  • 45° shroud cutoff. The hood blocks the glowing lens from a normal standing position. You see the wall, the hedge, or the canopy. You do not see the source.
  • ProAim knuckle. More than 220° of vertical adjustment, then a stainless lock screw. Once it is aimed, it stays there. That matters on a wash, where a few degrees changes whether the light climbs the wall or dumps into the mulch.
  • Small enough to hide. At about 6 inches tall it sits in planting, gravel, or against a foundation without becoming the thing you notice during the day.

A body that is meant to stay outside

The housing and shroud are die-cast A380 aluminum, with a zinc-aluminum knuckle and stainless hardware. FX finishes it in two layers: a sulfuric anodize, then a polyester powder coat. That is the system that keeps bronze, black, and white from chalking after a few seasons of sun and irrigation overspray. The fixture is rated IP65, and it is meant to be installed aiming up.

In the box: the fixture, a 10-foot lead, a 10-inch slotted stake, and a lock ring. You still supply the transformer. Input is 10–15 volts AC or DC.

Buy it lamped, or bring your own MR-16

The socket is a standard MR-16 (GU5.3), so the housing is not locked to one output. Two ways to order it:

  • $129.99, lamp included. P4 Pro LED, 4.3 VA, 2700K warm, 60° wide flood, 85+ CRI, rated 40,000 hours to 70% of initial output. 4.3 VA is easy on a transformer. A run of these will not eat a 300-watt supply the way halogen washes used to.
  • $109, no lamp. Same housing. Use it when the rest of the job is already specified around a different MR-16, or when you want 3000K instead of 2700K.

No lamp:

These configurations ship in 7–10 days. Bronze metallic disappears against bark and stone. Flat black disappears against dark mulch and shadowed walls. Flat white is the one to use on a light-colored wall where a dark fixture would show.

Where it earns its place on a plan

Use the VW-51 when the subject is a plane, not a point. A single tight spot on a tree trunk looks like a flashlight. Two or three VW-51s along a wall, a fence, or the face of a hedge read as architecture. The wide beam overlaps, the shroud keeps the sources hidden, and 4.3 VA each leaves room on the transformer for the path lights farther down the run.

It is the full-size MR-16 wash in the Vantage line. If the location is too tight for even this housing, the smaller Vantage VW-31 Petite takes an MR-11 instead. If you need zoning and dimming later, the VW-51 socket still accepts a ZD MR-16, or the run can be dimmed from the transformer or a Luxor CUBE.

Frequently asked questions

Does the VW-51 include a transformer?
No. It needs a remote 10–15V landscape transformer. The P4 lamp draws 4.3 VA. Add up every fixture on the circuit before you pick the transformer size.

Can I dim it?
Yes, from the transformer if that transformer dims, or on a Luxor controller when the lamp is a ZD MR-16 or the system uses a Luxor CUBE. The P4 Pro lamp itself is a fixed 2700K wide flood.

How long does it take to ship?
The bronze, flat black, and flat white configurations above ship in 7–10 days.

What warranty does it have?
Warranty terms are set by FX Luminaire. Check the fixture documentation or FX Luminaire's published warranty policy. FX publishes a limited warranty on the fixture and a separate limited warranty on a preinstalled lamp.
