Q: How deep can I measure soil moisture? A: The standard probe measures a 5.5″ depth. For deeper readings, dig a hole to your desired depth and install the sensor horizontally into the sidewall of the hole or vertically into the bottom of the hole. When placing the sensor tines vertically, you receive the readings as the average of the top 5.5” of the soil profile. When you place the sensor tines horizontally, you will receive an exact reading across the depth the sensor is placed.
